Numbers in Tarot

Alongside suit and imagery, most tarot traditions also read the number on a Minor Arcana card as its own layer of meaning — a numerology that runs consistently from Ace to Ten across all four suits.

The Ace, in every suit, marks a pure beginning — raw potential before it’s been shaped by circumstance. Two brings balance, choice or partnership; Three, growth and the first visible result of that choice; Four, stability, structure, sometimes stagnation; Five, disruption, conflict or a necessary shake-up; Six, a return to harmony, generosity or looking back. Seven asks for reflection or reassessment; Eight, focused effort and mastery in motion; Nine, near-completion, often carrying some fatigue after the effort; Ten, full completion — the end of that suit’s particular story, for better or worse.

Reading suit and number together often gives a fast, useful first impression: a Ten of Swords, for instance, reads as an ending (Ten) to a difficult, thought-heavy situation (Swords) — while a Ten of Cups reads as a full, emotional completion, usually a happy one. Treat these numbers as a starting sketch, not a rigid formula — the card’s picture still has the final say.
